A
Jedi Padawan, Knight, and Master during four episodes of Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the main characters in the saga. Together first with Qui-Gon Jinn as his Master, and then with Anakin Skywalker as
his own Padawan, he would be part of some of the most dynamic master-padawan duos in all of Jedi history.
Trained by Master Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan was involved
in many missions, among them Jinn’s hunt of Captain Cohl, which would come to an end in the book Cloak of Deception. While not always approving of his Master’s
occasional disobedience of Jedi Council instructions, Kenobi dutifully followed his Master in tracing Cohl and helping to
foil an assassination plot targeting Supreme Chancellor Valorum. In Episode I,
he served with his Master in their mission to protect the Queen, and eventually killed the Sith apprentice Darth Maul. For this, Kenobi was promoted to Jedi Knight and took Anakin Skywalker, whom he had
met on Tatooine, as his Padawan.
Thus would begin probably the most effective,
at least at killing bad guys, Jedi duo in history. This pair is mentioned in
the books Rogue Planet, The Approaching
Storm, and Dark Rendezvous. In
all of these, Kenobi’s training of Skywalker was apparent, but also his inability to teach Skywalker self-control. In Episode II, Kenobi was ordered to protect the former Queen of Naboo once again,
then to trace and bring the bounty hunter Jango Fett into Republic custody. Obi-Wan’s
capture on Geonosis by the early coalition that would become the Confederacy of Independent Systems helped jump-start the
Clone War, as a group of Jedi Masters journeyed to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme. In the ensuing confusion, Kenobi and his Padawan spied and followed Count Dooku, rightly assuming that
if they killed him, the coalition that he had built would soon collapse. However,
Obi-Wan was unable to kill or take Dooku into custody, and was wounded. He would
be rescued from death by Master Yoda, who fought Dooku to a standstill. Dooku
got away though, and for the next several years Kenobi would command clone troopers in a galaxy-wide war. He also kept up a running battle with Asajj Ventress, which mainly involved stealing her ship at every
opportunity. By Episode III, Kenobi was a Jedi Master, at the height of his powers,
and was more than a match for anything the CIS could throw at him. When the Supreme
Chancellor was kidnapped by General Grievous in Episode III, Kenobi and Skywalker, who was now a Jedi Knight, were the obvious
choices to rescue him. Taking out many droids, including Grievous’ top-of-the-line
bodyguards, they rescued the Chancellor and got him back on Coruscant, though Grievous escaped. When Grievous was traced, Obi-Wan Kenobi was again chosen for the important mission of finding him and
taking him out. Kenobi would do exactly that, in an epic duel of lightsabers
on the planet of Utapau. With the killing of General Grievous, the Clone War
was over, and Kenobi looked forward to the Jedi returning to their normal functions.
Instead, Order 66 was issued, and Obi-Wan was almost killed. One of a
handful of Jedi to survive the order, he was picked up by Bail Organa and Yoda, and went with Yoda to disable the communications-broadcasting
equipment in the Jedi Temple.
There, it was decided that Yoda would go after the Emperor, with Obi-Wan Kenobi assigned the task of killing Anakin
Skywalker, who was now Darth Vader, before the Republic was totally lost to the Sith.
In the legendary lightsaber duel that followed, Obi-Wan defeated Anakin and left him for dead on the fiery planet of
Mustafar. But Anakin-Vader survived, and would haunt the galaxy for years as
Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith. Kenobi went into hiding on the planet Tatooine,
where he could watch over the young son of Vader, Luke Skywalker, from a distance. When
fate intervened in the form of R2-D2 trying to get a message to Kenobi, he was forced out of retirement to ensure the safe
passage of R2-D2 to Bail Organa on Alderaan. However, they were captured by the
Death Star, and Kenobi distracted Darth Vader long enough to where his young protégé, Luke Skywalker, could escape. Luke would later be trained by Yoda, and guided by the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi would appear several times to Luke when Luke needed extra guidance, but finally Obi-Wan became one
with the Force, and lost his individuality. Thus passed the one who some say
is the greatest Jedi ever, who faced off against three Sith, and who became one of the few to die and yet retain himself in
the Force.
